The City That is to Come

No Lasting City
Cain built a city and named it Enoch. It did not last.
Nimrod built a city and named it Nineveh. It did not last.
The whole earth built a tower of Babel. It did not last.
Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans built cities and civilizations. They did not last.

Lasting City
God planted a garden in Eden and entrusted it to Adam and Eve to work it and to keep it.
The first Adam failed to cultivate it, but the second Adam came to cultivate it by becoming the seed, the tree, the gardener, and the Garden City.
The storyline of the lasting city or the city that is to come is Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration.

Genesis 3:15
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Psalm 1:3
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
Matthew 5:14
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Revelation 21:2
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

Already and Not Yet
“Cities have more of the image of God per square inch than any other place on earth.”
“Loving and serving the city strengthens the hands of the people of God, who bear the message of the gospel to the world.” Tim Keller, Center Church, p. 141
Jesus calls his disciples the light of the world – a city set on a hill. The lasting city is already here because the architect and the builder of the city has come and accomplished the work of redemption and restoration.
Jesus calls his disciples to love God by cultivating the lasting city through the Great Commission – making disciples of all nations.

Appreciate and Challenge Your City

Are you cultivating your city by being the best citizen, neighbor, or friend reflecting God’s goodness and glory?

Are you cultivating your city by battling the idols of the city through proclaiming and practicing the truths of the good news of Jesus Christ?

How are you doing in shining your light?
