What is eternal life? (3)

John 3:16-36

Unlimited – text messages, minutes, and data phone services and AYCE (all you can eat) restaurants are a couple of examples of how people want to experience freedom and eternal life. You want to see, feel, and think about ways in which you can experience life above all the obstacles, problems, and struggles of everyday.

The good news we find in the Bible is that Jesus is the eternal life now, we get to experience more of eternal life as we see Jesus increase and ourselves decrease and that eternal life is receiving the Holy Spirit without measure.

Eternal life is receiving the Spirit without measure.

vs 34. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.

You can experience eternal life that far exceeds any unlimited wireless services or all you can eat restaurants when you receive the Holy Spirit without measure.

vs. 31
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.

The bad news is that you are seeking after the “above all” on earth.

In other words, you are seeking after the “above all” on earth. The rankings, the ratings, and the lists are all about seeking “above all.”

Earthly ways can never fulfill the heavenly desires.

You are created, made, and wired to seek what is above all – to be like God.

People fall into two ways: those who give up and those who get it.

People get depressed because they don’t get the relief from the pains you feel – physical, emotional, and relational.
People complain about cable services because they want faster or unlimited connection, but can’t get it.  Next big thing, Next big experience, next all you can eat… it’s endlessly tiring.

Earthly ways don’t work. You are hopeless when you don’t get what you want. You are restless when you get what you want because what you get does not last forever.

I have good news. You have a choice. Forget earthly ways and choose heavenly way.

vs. 35 “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.”

When you receive the Holy Spirit, God becomes real.

vs. 33-34
He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.

God is real person. His words matter. His authority is the ultimate. You respect him. You change. When a couple receives a baby and becomes a new parent, everything changes. You are born again when you receive the Holy Spirit. When you receive the Holy Spirit everything changes.  God is a real person in your life. The Holy Spirit makes you see Jesus as your Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit helps you see God as your Father.

When you receive the Holy Spirit, you obey Jesus.

vs. 36
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

God is real above all and you obey Jesus all the time when you receive the Holy Spirit without measure. This is eternal life. It’s scary to lose control. It’s scary to be vulnerable. It’s uncomfortable to let someone in your life. You feel like you will fall to your death. You feel like you will be crushed in the end. When you receive the Holy Spirit, you are united with Christ like a skydiver is strapped to the instructor who knows how to guide and release the parachute. You can be assured that you will not fall to your death. You know that you can enjoy falling freely and experience flying like a bird because you are linked with Jesus.
