The Father of Lies

2015.9.6

John 8:39-47

39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.”They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

Introduction

ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder (now known as ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

2 symptoms:

1. Don’t seem listen when spoken to
2. Struggle to follow instructions

Symptoms Adam and Eve seemed to have. When approached by the Father of Lies, the Devil, they only focused on their own desires rather than what God told them and instructed them.

The Devil is the Father of Lies

Jesus shows that the devil has no love of God.

Jesus said to them,” If God were your Father, you would love me, for “I came from God and “I am here.” I came not of my own accord, but “he sent me.” (John 8:42)

1. Lack of love of God leads to lies and murders.

  • You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)
  • The bad news is that you pay attention to your desires and not God’s.
  • Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. (Psalm 86:11)

2. Love of God leads to hearing the words of God.

  • The good news is that Jesus came from God because he loved his Father.
  • Jesus said to them,” If God were your Father, you would love me, for “I came from God and “I am here.” I came not of my own accord, but “he sent me.” (John 8:42)

3. Pay attention to the object of your attention.

  • The object of your attention should be our new you, new self in Jesus Christ
  • Pay attention to His crucifixion for your sins so that you don’t have to be ashamed of your weaknesses
  • Pay attention to His resurrection, a new life in God as children of God

“Knowledge is only rumor until it lives in the muscle.– New Guinea proverb

Practicing your beliefs strengthens your faith.

Living your new life is like a spiritual workout that starts every Sunday and your character in Christ will be evident.
